Ann's Visit (Part 1)

September 9 - Ann is here!!! To say we were excited is an understatement! We have missed our Ann! Be prepared for lots of pictures!

Holyrood Park
September 11 - We went to Grassmarket and Prince's Street. The Grassmarket was, from 1477, one of Edinburgh's main market places, a part of which was given over to the sale of horse and cattle. this was also the site for public executions. Check out the story of Maggie Dickson.

New College

September 14 - We went to Craigmillar Castle (in the pouring rain!). The Preston family of Craigmillar, the local feudal barons, began building the castle in the late 14th century and building works continued through the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1660 the castle was sold to Sir John Gilmour, Lord President of the Court of Session, who made further alterations. The Gilmours left Craigmillar in the 18th century, and the castle fell into ruin.

After exploring the amazing Craigmillar Castle, we went to Sheep Heid Inn. There has reputedly been a pub on this spot selling liquor and victuals since 1360, making The Sheep Heid Inn perhaps the oldest surviving licensed premises in Edinburgh, if not Scotland.

Playing Skittles
September 15 - We explored the coastal town of North Berwick. We went to Tantallon Castle, played on the beach, went to the Scottish Seabird Centre and finished the evening with amazing seafood chowder at The Rocketeer Restaurant.

Bass Rock is in the distance. It looks white in color due to the thousands of Gannets that inhabit the rock.
