The Netherlands - A "forced" European vacation

August 5th-10th: After staying in Edinburgh for two days we ventured over to the Netherlands for a quick vacation. It's a crazy small world when you run into friends in the Edinburgh airport! The Buford family were headed home after their trip throughout Scotland!

We stayed in the quaint little town of Muiderberg in an Airbnb. It was great. Kylie loved having her own room! Asher slept for the first time in a "big boy bed," and Norah loved taking care of the guinea pig, Luna.

Day 1: We arrived around 1pm and went right away searching for food! We ate at this great restaurant on IJmeer Lake, whose menu was all in Dutch. Thankfully our waiter could speak some English because we almost ordered the kids calamari and mussels (on their kids menu)!

Day 2: Started our day with swimming in the lake. I'm guessing it wasn't more than 65 degrees. In the afternoon we headed to Zaanse Schaans and to the Zaans Museum. There we went to an amazing cheese shop, petted some cows, goats and chickens, and climbed in and out of clogs (Klompen)! We learned about windmills and saw them up close!

Day 3: Our day in Weesp... started as we were headed to catch a train into Amsterdam. The ticket machine would only take coins and the small market couldn't make change for the paper euros. So we walked a little ways to a bank, that couldn't help us either! So we decided to check out the town of Weesp (and we are so happy we did)! We had a great time walking around, watching the bridges go up and down to let boats in and out of the canal, and yummy ice cream at Nelis' Ijssalon.

Day 4: Muiderslot Castle - We went to the next town over named Muiden which is home to  Muiderslot castle, (originally built in 1280) and Pampus (a fort built in 1895 as part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam). We took a ferry on the Vecht river to get to Pampus which the kids got a kick out of! First castle sighting was a success!

Day 5: It rained for most of the day, so we stuck close to home. We were able to get out and play on a great playground by the lake! We have now have a new favorite treat called stroopwaffels!

Day 6: Headed back to Edinburgh. We had a wonderful visit to the Netherlands and will definitely go back one day! Such a great experience to live in a little village and walk to the grocery store daily and any activity!

Stay tuned for Edinburgh!
